W7AC Attends Yvette Alexanders State of the Ward Address
On May 27, Councilmember Yvette Alexander hosted her 2009 State of the Ward address. She delivered her State of the Ward Address at the newly renovated Sousa Middle School. The Councilmember extended the invitation out to community organizations to have display tables. Thus, Ward 7 Arts took heed to this opportunity. We were amongst several other organizations, which included Ward 7 Nonprofit Network, East River Strengthening Collaborative, Life Pieces and Masterpieces, Ophelia Egypt Planned Parenthood Metropolitan DC, and Deanwood Heights Main Streets. Our table exhibited a mix of photography, ceramics, painting and beautiful jewelry.
In addition, we had a few of our artist come out and talk to the engaging public about their work. The crowd was very intrigued by the painting of Mr. Bruce McNeil, by the sculpture and jewelry of Ms. Deidra Bell, and the ceramics of Mr. Mark Brown. Before presenting her 2009 State of the Ward address, the Councilmember acknowledge the hard-working non-profits in Ward 7. Among other leaders in Ward 7, Ms.Wanda Aikens received a non-profit excellence award. Ms. Wanda Aikens was presented with the Non-Profit Excellence award. After awards received, Councilmember gave an engaging speech enlightening the accomplishments of Ward 7 as well as the many new exciting development projects to come to Ward 7. Afterwards, the crowd convened to the cafeteria for a hearty dinner. During dinner, everyone mingled and discussed this exciting night. Conversations flourished. It was a joyous occasion in Ward 7.
